The short version. At an 8-to-5 step, one step is 22.5 inches. A 1-step grid puts dots 22.5" apart, a 2-step grid 45", a 4-step grid 90". A full field on a 4-step grid is about 900 dots; on a 1-step grid it is about 13,800. Which one you paint is preference — here is how to choose.

Change any setting and the picture redraws as you go.

Counting runs both ways. Step 8 is the next yard line, step 4 is halfway.

A 4-step grid needs no swaps — try 1- or 2-step to see that color work.

    Join the Band Dots community

At Band Dots we want every band director and every band parent to have the tools to get your dot field done — whatever your budget, and whatever you have to work with. We would love for you to join our community.

Tell us how we can help. What guides do we need to write to help you get dots down for your kids? At the end of the day we just want your students to be successful.

We use your address for Band Dots updates and nothing else. We do not sell it, and every email we send can be unsubscribed from in one click.

Want us to just do it?

We paint fields across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. If you would rather do it yourselves, the tools are here too — and everything on this page stays free either way.
